What Is Camera Invention Day?

Every March 19th is "Camera Invention Day" (カメラ発明記念日, Kamera Hatsumei Kinenbi) in Japan. It is said that on March 19, 1839, French painter and photographer Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre invented his camera. His process, named the daguerreotype after him, was formally presented at a joint session of the French Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Fine Arts on August 19, 1839, when the French government, having bought the rights in exchange for pensions, made it available to all. It became the world's first practical photographic process.

The Daguerreotype: Photography's Birth

The daguerreotype produced the world's first practical photographs — highly detailed images on silver-coated copper plates that captured scenes with extraordinary fidelity to reality. Daguerre's process required exposures of several minutes or more (making portraits difficult for subjects who had to remain still) and produced unique images that could not be reproduced. Despite these limitations, the daguerreotype immediately transformed how humanity recorded visual reality — the idea that the world itself could write its own image on a light-sensitive surface was revolutionary.

Photography Reaches Japan

Daguerreotype equipment is said to have been brought to Nagasaki via Dutch trade in 1848. Shimazu Nariakira, lord of the Satsuma domain, took a keen interest, and his portrait taken in 1857 by his retainer Ichiki Shirō is considered the oldest surviving photograph taken by a Japanese person. Early Meiji-era photographs — portraits of samurai, images of Westernizing Japan, documentary records of streets, buildings, and faces from the late 19th century — provide invaluable visual records of Japan's transformation that no previous generation could have preserved.

Japan's Photography Legacy

Japan became one of the world's great photography nations — both culturally (with deep traditions of both commercial portraiture and artistic photography) and industrially (with Japanese camera manufacturers Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Olympus, and others dominating the global camera market for decades). The camera, born in France in 1839, found one of its most enthusiastic and creative cultures of adoption in Japan.
