Every April 25th is "DNA Day" (DNAの日, DNA no Hi) in Japan and internationally. On April 25, 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick's landmark paper describing the double helix structure of DNA was published in the scientific journal Nature — one of the most important publications in the history of biology. The paper — just one page long — revealed the molecular structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) that explains how genetic information is stored and replicated, laying the foundation for molecular biology and the subsequent revolution in genetics, genomics, and biotechnology.
The Double Helix Discovery
Watson and Crick's 1953 paper built on data from multiple sources — including X-ray crystallography images produced by Rosalind Franklin and Raymond Gosling at King's College London, and structural analysis by Maurice Wilkins. Franklin's "Photo 51" — an X-ray diffraction image of DNA that revealed its helical structure — is now recognized as crucial evidence that Watson saw, with or without Franklin's explicit permission, in the months before the Nature paper was published. The attribution of credit between Watson, Crick, Wilkins (who shared the 1962 Nobel Prize) and Franklin (who died in 1958 before the prize was awarded) remains a subject of historical discussion about gender and scientific credit.
