What Is Life and Bonds Day?

May 17th is "Life and Bonds Day" (生命・きずなの日, Inochi Kizuna no Hi), established in 2002 by the Japan Donor Family Club (JDFC), an organization of families of organ donors. The date combines two ideas: May is the season of fresh green leaves when life flourishes, and "17" can be read as "do (10, tō) - nā (7, nana)" — a wordplay on "donor" (dōnā). The day invites people to reflect on the value of life and the bonds of life that connect us. It is registered with the Japan Anniversary Association.

Background of the Day

Organ transplantation depends on the wish of donors and their families to save someone else's life. The Japan Donor Family Club supports donor families and works to share their experiences, raising awareness of organ transplantation and the preciousness of life.

Organ Transplantation in Japan

• 1997: The Organ Transplant Act took effect on October 16, making it possible to donate organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys after brain death. However, a written declaration by the donor and family consent were required, and donation from children under 15 was not possible.
• 2010: The revised act took full effect on July 17, allowing donation after brain death with family consent as long as the person had not expressed refusal. This also made donation from children under 15 possible.
