What Is Boxing Day?

Every May 19th is "Boxing Day" (ボクシングの日, Bokushingu no Hi) in Japan — not to be confused with the British post-Christmas holiday. Japan's Boxing Day commemorates May 19, 1952, when Yoshio Shirai (白井義男) defeated world flyweight champion Dado Marino of Hawaii by 15-round decision at Korakuen Stadium in Tokyo, becoming the first Japanese world boxing champion in history. The day was established in 2010 by the Japan Professional Boxing Association. The victory lifted the spirits of a nation still rebuilding after World War II.

Yoshio Shirai: Japan's First World Champion

Yoshio Shirai was a technically gifted boxer known for his defense-first style. He was discovered and fully supported by Dr. Alvin R. Cahn, a biologist working for the GHQ, who oversaw his nutrition and conditioning. Shirai had lost to Marino in a 1951 non-title bout and then beat him by TKO in a rematch, so the May 19, 1952 title fight was their decisive meeting. Shirai went on to defend his title four times before losing it in 1954. The TV broadcast of his final fight in 1955 reportedly drew a 96.1% audience rating.

Japan's Boxing Legacy

Shirai's championship opened the door for generations of Japanese world champions, particularly in the lighter weight classes. Among the best known is Masahiko "Fighting" Harada, who won the world flyweight title in 1962 and the world bantamweight title in 1965, becoming a two-division champion. When Boxing Day was established, a society of Japanese world champions — similar to baseball's Meikyukai — was also formed.

Boxing in Japanese Culture

Boxing was once called "kentō" (拳闘, "fist fighting") in Japan, a word still seen in old newspapers. Professional boxing drew huge television audiences in the 1960s and 1970s, and major title fights remain big broadcast events. The story of boxers overcoming hardship to reach a world title has been a recurring theme in Japanese sports writing and film.
