What Is Meteorology Day?

Every June 1st is "Meteorology Day" (気象記念日, Kishō Kinenbi) in Japan. On June 1, 1875, Japan's first meteorological observatory — the "Tokyo Meteorological Observatory" (東京気象台, now the Japan Meteorological Agency headquarters) — was established in Akasaka Aoi-chō (present-day Toranomon, Minato Ward, Tokyo), beginning Japan's systematic, government-organized meteorological observations. The day commemorates the establishment of Japan's modern meteorological infrastructure and is marked with public events, weather exhibitions, and educational activities organized by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Japan's Meteorological Heritage

The 1875 Tokyo Meteorological Observatory was established with the assistance of German meteorologist Erwin Knipping (who would later produce Japan's first weather map in 1883 — see February 16th, Weather Map Day). The observatory began systematic measurements of temperature, pressure, humidity, wind, and precipitation — creating the continuous observational record that forms the foundation of Japan's century-and-a-half of meteorological data. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) now operates approximately 1,300 automated observing stations and maintains the national weather forecasting, typhoon warning, and earthquake reporting services that are essential to Japan's safety infrastructure.

Meteorology and Japan's Safety

Weather information is critically important in Japan — a country exposed to 25-30 typhoons per year (10-11 of which approach or make landfall), subject to heavy snowfall, extreme heat events, and the complex regional weather patterns created by its mountain ranges and surrounding seas. The JMA's weather forecasting, severe weather warnings, and disaster risk information services are among the most heavily used government services in Japan, consulted daily by millions for everything from daily planning to life-safety decisions during extreme weather events.

  • Himawari satellites: Japan's Himawari (sunflower) series of geostationary weather satellites — currently Himawari-8 and -9 — provide images updated every 10 minutes in 16 spectral bands from 36,000 kilometers above the equator, enabling weather forecast accuracy that was impossible before the satellite era.
  • Typhoon naming: Japan uses a numbering system for typhoons rather than personal names — "Typhoon No. 3" (台風第3号, Taifū Dai-san-gō) rather than named storms as used in the Atlantic. This system reflects Japan's pragmatic approach to weather communication, prioritizing clear numbering over memorable names.
