What Is Hearing Aid Day?

June 6th is celebrated every year as "Hearing Aid Day." It was established in 1999 (Heisei 11) by the national association of hearing aid retailers (now the Japan Hearing Aid Dispensers Association), co-organized with the national council of hearing aid manufacturers (now the Japan Hearing Instruments Manufacturers Association). It is registered with the Japan Anniversary Association as established by the Japan Hearing Instruments Manufacturers Association. The day expresses the hope that hearing aids will become a familiar part of people's lives and that they will help ease the hearing difficulties many people face.

Why June 6th?

Several meanings are packed into the choice of June 6th.

• The shape of "6" looks like an ear: Place two "6"s facing each other and they resemble a pair of ears -- so June 6th, with its two 6s, was chosen.
• Double "Ear Day" (3/3): March 3rd is known as "Ear Day" (a pun on "mi-mi," meaning "ear"). Because a hearing aid adds another "ear" to an ear whose hearing has weakened, there is said to be a sense of "3 x 2 = June 6th."
• A person wearing a hearing aid: According to the Japan Anniversary Association, the numeral "6" resembles a person wearing a custom-made hearing aid, and June 6th represents wearing hearing aids in both ears.
• (Not part of the origin, but) a good time for maintenance: June brings heat and humidity, which hearing aids dislike, so it is a good time to review care such as using a drying case.

Hearing Loss and the Need for Hearing Aids

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 1.5 billion people worldwide currently live with some degree of hearing loss, a figure projected to rise to about 2.5 billion by 2050. In Japan, too, hearing loss becomes more common with age, and it has drawn attention as one of the preventable risk factors for dementia.

• Hearing loss and dementia: Some studies suggest that the more severe the hearing loss, the higher the risk of dementia, and whether appropriate use of hearing aids can lower that risk is being studied.
• Communication: Difficulty hearing can reduce a person's willingness to participate in conversations and may lead to social isolation.
• The importance of early action: If you notice difficulty hearing, it's important to first have the cause checked by an ear, nose, and throat doctor.

The History and Evolution of Hearing Aids

• 18th–19th centuries: Funnel-shaped devices called "ear trumpets" were used.
• Around 1898: In the United States, an electric hearing aid based on telephone transmitter (carbon microphone) technology was developed.
• 1950s: The shift from vacuum tubes to transistors enabled smaller devices.
• 1990s: The introduction of digital signal processing dramatically improved sound quality and precision.
• 2000s onward: Bluetooth connectivity with smartphones, automatic sound-field adjustment, and AI-powered features have driven rapid advances in functionality.

Types of Hearing Aids and How to Choose

• Behind-the-ear (BTE): The main unit hooks over the back of the ear. Easy to put on and the battery is simple to replace.
• In-the-ear (ITE): A compact type that fits in the ear canal. Discreet, and convenient for phone use.
• Pocket/body-worn: The main unit is kept in a pocket and connected to earphones. Easy to operate.
• Consult a specialist: Adjusting a hearing aid to each person's hearing (fitting) is crucial, so it's a good idea to consult a certified hearing aid shop with a certified hearing aid technician.
