What Is Chiba Prefecture Day?

Every June 15th is "Chiba Prefecture Day" (千葉県民の日, Chiba Kenmin no Hi) in Japan. On June 15, 1873, Inba Prefecture (印旛県) and Kisarazu Prefecture (木更津県) merged to form Chiba Prefecture (千葉県) — establishing the administrative unit that has governed the region east of Tokyo ever since. In 1984, Chiba Prefecture designated June 15th as "Chiba Prefecture Day" for residents to celebrate their prefecture's founding and regional identity, with many schools and public institutions observing the day with commemorative activities.

Chiba Prefecture's Character

Chiba Prefecture (千葉県) — situated east of Tokyo on the Bōsō Peninsula (房総半島) between Tokyo Bay and the Pacific Ocean — is one of Japan's most populous prefectures (approximately 6.3 million residents) and has a remarkably diverse character: the high-density urban areas adjacent to Tokyo (including Chiba City and Narita with its international airport) coexist with agricultural plains (Japan's top producer of peanuts and a leading producer of daikon radishes), scenic coastal areas, and the Tokyo Disneyland resort (technically in Urayasu City, Chiba Prefecture).

Chiba's geography and history have made it the bedroom community for millions of Tokyo commuters — many Tokyo workers live in Chiba's western suburbs and commute into central Tokyo via JR and private railway lines. This satellite-city relationship shapes Chiba's economy, demographics, and self-image — the prefecture is densely settled near Tokyo but maintains distinct agricultural, coastal, and historical characteristics in its more distant areas.

• Narita Airport: Narita International Airport in Chiba Prefecture is one of Japan's main international gateways and handles more international air cargo than any other airport in Japan. It opened in 1978 as the "New Tokyo International Airport," taking over most international flights from Haneda at the time.
