What Is Tokyo International Airport Opening Day?

Every August 25th is "Tokyo International Airport Opening Day" (東京国際空港開港記念日, Tōkyō Kokusai Kūkō Kaikō Kinenbi) in Japan. On August 25, 1931, the "Tokyo Aerodrome" (東京飛行場, now Tokyo International Airport / Haneda Airport) was opened as Japan's first government-operated civilian aviation dedicated airport — providing the capital with dedicated infrastructure for the growing commercial and private aviation industry. The airport, built on reclaimed land along the Tama River estuary in Ōta Ward, Tokyo, has grown into one of the world's busiest airports.

Haneda Airport's Development

The 1931 Tokyo Aerodrome was a modest facility by later standards — a grass runway and simple terminal on newly reclaimed coastal land. Its development accelerated through the prewar period as Japanese aviation expanded; the airport was taken over and significantly expanded by the U.S. military during the Allied Occupation (1945-1952). After return to Japanese control, Haneda served as Japan's primary international gateway until Narita International Airport opened in 1978. Since then, Haneda has primarily served domestic routes while gradually regaining international capacity — now serving both as Japan's busiest domestic airport and a significant international hub.

Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) is currently Japan's busiest airport and one of the world's busiest, handling over 80 million passengers annually in peak years. Its close proximity to central Tokyo (15 minutes by monorail or train from Hamamatsuchō Station) compared to Narita (60+ minutes from central Tokyo) makes it the preferred airport for both domestic travelers and international visitors when routes are available. Haneda's expanding international terminal capacity — with new routes added progressively since the 2010s — has made it an increasingly important international gateway alongside Narita.
