What Is Kansai International Airport Opening Day?

Every September 4th is also "Kansai International Airport Opening Day" (関西国際空港開港記念日, Kansai Kokusai Kūkō Kaikō Kinenbi) in Japan. On September 4, 1994, Kansai International Airport (関西国際空港, Kansai International Airport or KIX) opened on a purpose-built artificial island in Osaka Bay — Japan's first 24-hour international airport and one of the world's most technically ambitious engineering projects. The airport, located approximately 40 kilometers from central Osaka, replaced Itami Airport for international flights and provided the Kansai region with modern long-haul international aviation capacity.

An Airport Built on the Sea

Kansai International Airport's construction on a purpose-built artificial island was driven by the impossibility of expanding existing airports in the densely populated Osaka region while maintaining 24-hour operations. The island — approximately 4 kilometers long and 1.25 kilometers wide — was constructed by dumping 180 million cubic meters of fill material into Osaka Bay to a depth of 18 meters, creating land where none had existed. The project cost approximately ¥1.45 trillion and required extraordinary engineering innovation in foundation design, as the island has experienced significant settling into the soft seabed (several meters more than initial predictions).

Renzo Piano's Terminal

The airport's main terminal building was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano — a 1.7-kilometer glass and steel structure that is one of the world's largest single buildings. The terminal's innovative curved roof, which uses a single repeating geometry to channel airflow and create natural ventilation, won Piano international recognition and contributed to his 1998 Pritzker Prize.

Fun Facts

• Island sinking: Kansai Airport's artificial island has sunk approximately 3 meters below its original construction height since 1994 — significantly more than engineers predicted — requiring continuous counter-measures including raising runway and taxiway surfaces. The sinking is caused by compression of the soft seabed sediment under the island's weight.
• Typhoon Jebi 2018: Typhoon Jebi in September 2018 caused severe damage to Kansai Airport — temporarily closing the facility when a tanker ship broke free of its moorings and struck the connecting bridge, stranding approximately 3,000 travelers on the island. The incident highlighted the vulnerability of an island airport to extreme weather events.
