What Is River Day?

July 7th is River Day in Japan, established by the Ministry of Construction (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) in 1996, the 100th anniversary of Japan's modern river system. The date was chosen for its connection to Tanabata — the Star Festival, in which the Milky Way (literally "Heavenly River" in Japanese) separates two celestial lovers — and because July is "River Care Month" in Japan.

Why River Day Was Established

During Japan's high economic growth period, rivers were heavily engineered with concrete embankments for flood control, destroying natural ecosystems and riverside scenery. A movement grew to see rivers again as ecosystems, cultural heritage, and recreational spaces. River Day was set up in 1996, 100 years after the original River Act of 1896. In 1997, the River Act was revised to add "the improvement and conservation of the river environment" to its purposes.

• Fireflies: The presence of hotaru from June through July is a sign of a healthy, living river

• The kanji 川: An ancient pictograph representing three streams of flowing water
• The Milky Way: In Japanese it is "Ama no Gawa" (River of Heaven) — the disk of our own galaxy seen from the inside. In summer we face the direction of the galactic center, so it looks especially rich
• River restoration projects: Concrete embankments are being removed across Japan to restore rivers to their natural state

• On Tanabata night, visit a nearby river and look up to see whether the Milky Way is visible
• Spend time near a local river and look for dragonflies, kingfishers, herons, and other wildlife
• Join a riverbank cleanup and take care of the waterway that flows through your community
