Hi-Vision Day

What Is Hi-Vision Day?

September 16th is "Hi-Vision Day" in Japan, said to have been established by the former Ministry of International Trade and Industry (now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) to mark the "9:16" aspect ratio of Hi-Vision (high-definition television) screens.

A Tech Memorial Day Born from a Screen Ratio

This day celebrates Hi-Vision broadcasting, which brought wide, high-definition images to Japanese television for the first time.

• Origin: The date was set at September 16th (9/16) to echo the Hi-Vision screen's "9:16" aspect ratio
• What Hi-Vision is: A general term for a video format offering both sharper resolution and a wider screen ratio than conventional television
• Established by: Reportedly created by the former Ministry of International Trade and Industry to promote awareness of Hi-Vision technology
• Another Hi-Vision Day: The former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (now the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) and NHK observe November 25 under the same name, based on Hi-Vision's 1,125 scanning lines

From Analog to Digital: A Journey in Broadcast Technology

Where conventional television used a boxy 4:3 screen ratio, Hi-Vision introduced a wide 16:9 (equivalently 9:16) format that felt much closer to the cinematic experience. As Japan later transitioned to terrestrial digital broadcasting, Hi-Vision technology spread rapidly into ordinary households.

How to Mark the Day

• Check the aspect ratio of your own TV or display screen
• Look into the history of when Hi-Vision broadcasting first began
• Enjoy a favorite video in high definition on a large screen
• Talk with family or friends about how video technology has evolved

A Ratio That Carries the Memory of a Visual Culture

Hi-Vision Day is a quirky memorial day born from nothing more than a screen's width-to-height ratio. On September 16th, take a moment to appreciate the technological journey behind the television images we watch every day without a second thought.
