What Is Manga Day?

Every July 17th is "Manga Day" (漫画の日, Manga no Hi) in Japan. The date commemorates July 17, 1841, when the British satirical magazine Punch — subtitled "The London Charivari" — was first published. Punch pioneered the modern concept of the political cartoon and the illustrated satirical magazine, influencing visual humor worldwide. Japan's connection lies in the fact that the word "manga" (漫画) in its modern sense — sequential illustrated storytelling — developed partly through the influence of Western illustrated magazines and cartoons that flowed into Japan from the Meiji era onward.

The Origins of "Manga"

The word "manga" was famously used by the great ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai in 1814 for his series of sketching manuals "Hokusai Manga" — though Hokusai's use of the term meant something closer to "random sketches" than sequential narrative. The modern meaning of manga as sequential illustrated storytelling emerged through the synthesis of Japanese pictorial traditions with influences from Western comics and illustrated magazines. The postwar period, led by Osamu Tezuka ("the God of Manga"), established the visual language and narrative structures of modern manga that would eventually influence comics worldwide.

Japan's Manga Industry

Japan's manga industry is one of the world's largest publishing sectors. Annual manga sales in Japan exceed 600 billion yen, encompassing manga magazines, collected volumes (tankobon), digital manga, and related merchandise. Manga is consumed by readers of all ages and demographics — there are manga for children (kodomomuke), teenagers (shōnen and shōjo), young adults (seinen and josei), and working adults, covering every imaginable genre from romance and action to business management, cooking, and medical drama.

Manga's Global Reach

Japanese manga has become a genuinely global art form. Translated into dozens of languages, manga series like One Piece, Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, and Dragon Ball have attracted readerships counted in hundreds of millions worldwide. The visual style and narrative conventions of Japanese manga have influenced comics, graphic novels, and animation across the globe, creating a distinctive Japanese contribution to world visual culture.
