What Is Gas Day?

October 31st is "Gas Day" in Japan. It was established in 1972 by the Japan Gas Association, which works to promote the sound development of the city gas industry. The date commemorates the lighting of Japan's first gas lamps on Bashamichi Street in Yokohama on the 29th day of the 9th month of 1872 (Meiji 5) -- October 31st on the modern calendar.

A Few Facts About LNG, the Source of City Gas

Today, city gas is made mainly from natural gas, whose main component is methane. When cooled to minus 162°C, natural gas becomes a liquid -- LNG, or liquefied natural gas -- shrinking to about 1/600 of its volume as a gas. Taking advantage of this, Japan imports almost all of its natural gas as LNG by tanker. It also emits less carbon dioxide when burned than coal or oil.
