What Is Fountain Day?

Every August 21st is "Fountain Day" (噴水の日, Funsui no Hi) in Japan. On August 21, 1877, Japan's first Western-style fountain was unveiled at Ueno Park in Tokyo during the First National Industrial Exhibition (第1回内国勧業博覧会). The fountain — powered by a pump drawing water from Shinobazu Pond — was the centerpiece of the exhibition grounds and drew huge crowds eager to see this novel spectacle. For most visitors, it was their first sight of a decorative fountain, and the cascading water became one of the exhibition's most popular attractions.

The First National Industrial Exhibition

The National Industrial Exhibitions (内国勧業博覧会, Naikoku Kangyō Hakurankai) were Meiji Japan's answer to the great world's fairs of 19th-century Europe — large-scale displays of domestic industrial and cultural production designed to showcase Japan's modernizing achievements and stimulate commercial development. The first, held at Ueno Park in 1877, was organized by the Home Ministry and displayed products ranging from silk textiles and ceramics to agricultural equipment and industrial machinery. The Western-style fountain at its center was itself a statement: Japan could not only use Western technology but display it for public appreciation.

Fountains and Public Space in Japan

The 1877 Ueno fountain introduced a new concept to Japan: the decorative public fountain as a feature of civic space. In the following decades, fountains became standard elements of Japanese parks, public plazas, and exhibition grounds. Today, Japan's public spaces — from Tokyo's Yoyogi Park to regional city plazas — feature elaborate fountain installations, and the "interactive fountain" or "dancing fountain" (often with music and lighting) has become a popular feature of shopping centers and tourist areas.

Ueno Park Today

Ueno Park (上野公園) — the setting of Japan's first fountain — remains one of Tokyo's most beloved public spaces, home to major museums, the Ueno Zoo, Shinobazu Pond (famous for lotus flowers and cormorant birds), and some of Tokyo's most spectacular cherry blossom viewing locations. The park's history as the site of Japan's first industrial exhibitions gives it a special place in the narrative of Meiji Japan's modernization.
