What Is Civil Aviation Day?

Every October 25th is "Civil Aviation Day" (民間航空記念日, Minkan Kōkū Kinenbi) in Japan. On October 25, 1951, Japan Airlines (日本航空, JAL) launched its first postwar domestic commercial flights — operating routes between Tokyo (Haneda), Osaka (Itami), and Fukuoka using Martin 202 aircraft chartered from Northwest Airlines. This launch marked Japan's return to civil aviation after World War II, during which all civilian aviation had been prohibited under the Allied Occupation. The modest inaugural service grew into one of the world's major airline networks.

Japan's Aviation History

Japan had developed an active civil aviation industry in the 1930s, with routes connecting the home islands to Japan's overseas territories in East Asia. All civil aviation was suspended after Japan's defeat in 1945 under Occupation restrictions. When flights resumed in 1951, they did so in a different world: jet aviation was on the horizon, international travel was growing, and Japan's economic recovery was beginning to gather momentum. JAL was established in 1951 as a semi-governmental airline, and All Nippon Airways (全日本空輸, ANA) was founded in 1952 as a fully private competitor.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have grown into two of the world's major international carriers, serving hundreds of destinations across Asia, the Pacific, Europe, and the Americas. Japan's domestic aviation market is also among the world's busiest — the Tokyo-Sapporo, Tokyo-Osaka, and Tokyo-Fukuoka routes are consistently among the highest-traffic air routes globally. Japan's airlines are internationally recognized for their service quality, safety records, and punctuality.

Aviation and Japan's Economy

Civil aviation has been essential to Japan's postwar economic integration with the world — carrying business travelers, tourists, and goods between Japan and its trading partners. Tourism to Japan has grown dramatically in recent decades, with international visitor arrivals reaching record levels in the years before the COVID-19 pandemic. Aviation infrastructure — including Narita, Haneda, Kansai, and Chubu airports — represents massive public and private investment in Japan's connectivity with the world.
