Basketball Day (Basuketto Bōru no Hi)

World Observances

What Is Basketball Day?

December 21st is "Basketball Day." It commemorates December 21, 1891, when Canadian-born physical education teacher James Naismith held the world's first game of basketball at the YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith's original rules numbered just 13, and the game was simple: throw a ball into a peach basket nailed to the wall.

The Story Behind Basketball's Invention

Naismith was asked to invent, in just 14 days, a game that students could play safely indoors during winter. The result was basketball—a sport that avoided heavy physical contact while rewarding teamwork, agility, and precision. Famously, the peach baskets used as goals had no holes in the bottom, so someone had to climb a ladder to retrieve the ball every time a point was scored.

Basketball in Japan Today

  • B.League: Japan's professional basketball league, founded in 2016, with popular teams such as the Chiba Jets, Alvark Tokyo, and Ryukyu Golden Kings
  • 2023 FIBA World Cup: Japan's national team earned its first outright Olympic qualification in 48 years, securing a spot at the Paris Games
  • Yuki Kawamura: Signed with the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies in 2024, sparking excitement over Japanese players in the NBA

The Appeal of Basketball

  • Its fast pace and frequent scoring keep the action dramatic from start to finish
  • NBA and B.League games offer high entertainment value, with the energy of the arena and elaborate presentations
  • 3x3 basketball became an official Olympic event starting at Tokyo 2020, offering an accessible way to enjoy the game on a smaller court
