What Is Dog Lovers' Day?

Every May 13th is "Dog Lovers' Day" (愛犬の日, Aiken no Hi) in Japan. The Japan Kennel Club (ジャパンケネルクラブ, JKC) — established in 1949 as Japan's principal dog registry and breed organization — designated May 13th as Dog Lovers' Day to promote responsible dog ownership, breed preservation, and the welfare of dogs in Japanese society. The date connects to the founding of the predecessor organization in 1956 that eventually became the JKC.

Japan has produced several distinctive native dog breeds recognized internationally: the Shiba Inu (柴犬), Akita (秋田犬, the breed of Hachikō), Japanese Spitz (日本スピッツ), Kishu (紀州犬), Kai (甲斐犬), Hokkaido (北海道犬), Shikoku (四国犬), and Tosa (土佐犬). The Shiba Inu has achieved extraordinary international popularity through internet culture — the "Doge" meme featuring a Shiba Inu with internal monologue captions became one of the internet's most recognized memes and even inspired the cryptocurrency "Dogecoin."

Dog Welfare in Japan

Japan has progressively strengthened its animal welfare legislation, with revisions to the Animal Welfare and Management Law (動物の愛護及び管理に関する法律) tightening standards for pet shops, breeders, and animal exhibitions. The practice of buying dogs from pet shops — which remain a significant sales channel in Japan, unlike in many Western countries where adoption is more common — continues to be debated by animal welfare advocates.
