What Is Famicom Day?

Every July 15th is "Famicom Day" (ファミコンの日, Famikon no Hi) in Japan. On July 15, 1983, Nintendo (任天堂) released the "Family Computer" (ファミリーコンピュータ, Famirī Konpyūta) — universally nicknamed "Famicom" (ファミコン) — at a price of ¥14,800. The Famicom, sold internationally as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), became one of the most successful consumer electronics products in history, reviving the global video game industry after the catastrophic 1983 Atari crash, and establishing Nintendo and Japanese game developers as the dominant force in global gaming for decades.

The Famicom's Impact

The Famicom's launch on July 15, 1983 was modest by later standards — a hardware launch with three launch titles (Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Popeye). But the system's combination of excellent hardware for its price, Nintendo's commitment to quality software, and the introduction of iconic franchises — Super Mario Bros.
