What is Tools Day?

October 9th is "Tools Day" (Dōgu no Hi). It comes from a play on numbers — "10" can be read as "dō" and "9" as "gu," together forming "dōgu", the Japanese word for "tool" — and was designated by the Tokyo Kappabashi Shopping Street Promotion Association, which runs Kappabashi Dōgu-gai, Tokyo's famous kitchenware district. It is a day to look again at the tools that help us every day and appreciate their value.

Why Is October 9 "Tools Day"?

The origin is the wordplay "10 (dō) + 9 (gu) = dōgu" (tool). Kappabashi held its first "Kappabashi Dōgu Matsuri" (Tool Festival) in 1983, and from the third festival in 1985 it designated October 9th as "Tools Day." The festival is still held every year over a period that includes October 9th.

What Is Kappabashi Dōgu-gai?

Kappabashi Dōgu-gai is a wholesale district in Taito City, Tokyo, located between Asakusa and Ueno. Its specialty shops sell tableware, cooking utensils, packaging, plastic food samples, and chef's uniforms, and it is known as "the professionals' street that supports professionals."
