Every October 28th is "Gunma Prefecture Day" (群馬県民の日, Gunma Kenmin no Hi) in Japan. On October 28, 1871, during the Meiji government's sweeping administrative reorganization known as the "Abolition of Domains and Establishment of Prefectures" (廃藩置県), "Gunma Prefecture" (群馬県) was formally established — creating the administrative unit that has governed the mountainous inland region north of Tokyo ever since.
