What Is Manga Day?

Every November 3rd is "Manga Day" (まんがの日, Manga no Hi) in Japan. It was established in 2002 by the Japan Cartoonists Association and five publishers, who chose Culture Day (文化の日) because they wanted manga to be recognized as culture. The date also happens to be the birthday of Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫, November 3, 1928–1989) — widely known as the "God of Manga" (漫画の神様) and the creator who shaped the visual language and narrative possibilities of modern Japanese manga.

Osamu Tezuka: The God of Manga

Tezuka Osamu was born on November 3, 1928 in Toyonaka, Osaka, and from childhood displayed an extraordinary talent for drawing and storytelling. His 1947 manga "Shin Takarajima" (新宝島, "New Treasure Island") — with its cinematic panel compositions, dynamic action sequences, and character-driven narrative — demonstrated that manga could do things Japanese comics had never done before. Over the following four decades, Tezuka produced approximately 700 manga series and 150,000 pages — including "Astro Boy" (鉄腕アトム), "Black Jack" (ブラック・ジャック), "Phoenix" (火の鳥), "Buddha" (ブッダ), and many others — while also pioneering Japanese TV animation through his Mushi Production studio.

Tezuka's Visual Language

The manga visual language that Tezuka developed — large expressive eyes drawn from Disney animation, cinematic panel compositions that moved the camera between shots, speed lines indicating motion, and the systematic use of visual shorthand for emotion — became the global standard for Japanese manga and, through anime, for animated visual storytelling worldwide. Nearly every manga artist working today draws on conventions that Tezuka established, making him the most influential figure in the history of his medium.

Manga as World Culture

Japanese manga — the medium that Tezuka's work defined — has become a global cultural phenomenon, translated into dozens of languages and read by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Manga's influence on comics, animation, film, game design, and visual storytelling globally is immeasurable. Manga Day is a day to celebrate this cultural inheritance — and, fittingly, the birthday of the extraordinary creator who did so much to build it.

• Tezuka's output: According to Tezuka Productions, Tezuka's lifetime output amounted to approximately 700 titles and about 150,000 pages — an extraordinary level of creative productivity.
• Tezuka Osamu Museum: The Tezuka Osamu Manga Museum (手塚治虫記念館) in Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture — where Tezuka grew up — celebrates his life and work with extensive collections of original artwork, manuscripts, and interactive displays introducing his characters and stories.
