November 18 is "Civil Engineering Day." It commemorates the founding of the "Engineering Society" (predecessor of today's Japan Society of Civil Engineers) on November 18, 1879 (Meiji 12), and was established by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 1987 (Showa 62). The date also relates to a wordplay on the stroke counts of the kanji for "civil engineering" (土=3 strokes, 木=4 strokes, totaling 7—linking to 11/18).
What Infrastructure Does Civil Engineering Support?
When people hear "civil engineering," they often picture road construction, but the field actually covers an enormous range:
- Transportation infrastructure: roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports, and ports
- Water infrastructure: dams, water and sewage systems, river embankments, and flood control facilities
- Urban infrastructure: urban planning, subways, and redevelopment
- Disaster-prevention infrastructure: breakwaters, erosion-control dams, and landslide countermeasures
- Environmental infrastructure: waste treatment facilities, parks, and green spaces
The Frontlines of Civil Engineering
In recent years, "aging infrastructure" has become a serious issue. Bridges, tunnels, and roads built en masse during the period of rapid economic growth (1960s–70s) are now reaching the point of needing renewal all at once, and drones, AI, and sensor technology are increasingly being used for inspection, repair, and replacement. Responding to climate-change-driven heavy rains and flooding is also a major challenge for civil engineering.
