What Is Civil Engineering Day? A Tribute to the Infrastructure That Supports Our Lives

November 18 is "Civil Engineering Day." It commemorates the founding of the "Kogakkai" engineering society (predecessor of today's Japan Federation of Engineering Societies) on November 18, 1879 (Meiji 12). The date also comes from the kanji for "civil engineering" (土木): the character 土 can be broken down into 十 and 一 ("11"), and 木 into 十 and 八 ("18"). The day was established in 1987 (Showa 62) by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, the Japan Civil Engineering Contractors' Association, and others, with the support of the Ministry of Construction (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism).

What Infrastructure Does Civil Engineering Support?

When people hear "civil engineering," they often picture road construction, but the field actually covers an enormous range:

• Transportation infrastructure: roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports, and ports
• Water infrastructure: dams, water and sewage systems, river embankments, and flood control facilities
• Urban infrastructure: urban planning, subways, and redevelopment
• Disaster-prevention infrastructure: breakwaters, erosion-control dams, and landslide countermeasures
• Environmental infrastructure: waste treatment facilities, parks, and green spaces

The Frontlines of Civil Engineering

In recent years, "aging infrastructure" has become a serious issue. Bridges, tunnels, and roads built en masse during the period of rapid economic growth (1960s–70s) are now reaching the point of needing renewal all at once, and drones, AI, and sensor technology are increasingly being used for inspection, repair, and replacement. Responding to climate-change-driven heavy rains and flooding is also a major challenge for civil engineering.

• Attend local Civil Engineering Day events (such as bridge or dam tours) organized by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers
• Visit a dam or bridge with your kids to spark their interest in infrastructure
