What Is Helicopter Day?

Every April 15th is "Helicopter Day" in Japan. The date commemorates the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci (April 15, 1452), who is credited with conceptualizing the aeroscrew — a device whose rotating-blade principle anticipated the modern helicopter. In Japan, the day is used to highlight the role and importance of helicopters in society: in disaster rescue, emergency medical services, law enforcement, forestry management, and broadcasting.

Leonardo da Vinci's Aeroscrew

Among the thousands of pages of Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks, a sketch dated to around 1490 depicts a "helical air screw" — a device with a large rotating spiral surface designed to "drill" upward through the air. While Leonardo's aeroscrew was never built and could not have flown with 15th-century materials and power sources, the concept of using a rotating surface to generate vertical lift was centuries ahead of its time. Modern historians of technology recognize this sketch as a remarkable imaginative leap, even if the direct line from Leonardo's idea to the 20th-century helicopter is indirect.

The First Practical Helicopters

The first fully controllable practical helicopter, the Vought-Sikorsky VS-300, made its first flight on September 14, 1939, piloted by Igor Sikorsky. The VS-300's design — a single main rotor with a smaller anti-torque tail rotor — became the template for most modern helicopters. Japan began its own helicopter industry in the postwar period, with domestic manufacturers developing aircraft for civilian and military applications.

Helicopters in Japan Today

Helicopters play a critical role in Japan's disaster response. The country's mountainous terrain, frequent earthquakes, typhoons, and floods make aerial rescue operations essential. The Japan Coast Guard, the Self-Defense Forces, and prefectural fire departments operate large helicopter fleets. Doctor helicopters (ドクターヘリ), which carry emergency medical teams directly to accident scenes, have been credited with saving thousands of lives since their nationwide introduction in the 2000s.
