Smell Awareness Day (Nioi no Hi)

Industry Days

What Is Smell Awareness Day?

February 1 each year is "Smell Awareness Day." The date comes from a wordplay: "ni (2) o (0) i (1)" sounds like "nioi" (smell/odor). It was established in 2000 by P&G Japan (formerly the seller of Febreze), which makes deodorizers and air fresheners. It's a day to think about the unique sense of smell and reconsider how we manage and live with odors.

The Curious Nature of Smell

The human sense of smell has a unique feature unlike any other sense. While visual and auditory information is processed through the cerebral cortex, smell connects directly to the limbic system—the brain region that governs emotion and memory. This is why a single whiff of a familiar scent can suddenly bring back old memories.

The Proust Effect

This connection between smell and memory is known as the "Proust effect," named after French writer Marcel Proust, who in "In Search of Lost Time" described how the scent of a madeleine dipped in tea vividly brought back memories of his childhood. Many of us have had a similar experience—a scent suddenly bringing to mind a place or person from long ago.

Olfactory Adaptation

If you smell the same odor continuously, you gradually stop noticing it—a phenomenon called "olfactory fatigue" or "adaptation." This is why we often can't smell our own home's particular scent. Regular ventilation, or checking the smell of your room right after coming home, can help you notice it more objectively.

Types of Smells and How We Perceive Them

Smells are broadly divided into pleasant "fragrances" and unpleasant "odors," but preferences for the same smell can vary widely from person to person, shaped by cultural background and personal experience.

Japan's Sense of Smell

Japan is often said to have a culture that strongly favors "odorlessness." The market for deodorizers is larger than for perfumes, reflecting a tendency to value "cleanliness" over "fragrance." At the same time, distinctly Japanese aromatic traditions—incense, the scent of tatami mats, the smell of a hinoki cypress bath—continue to be cherished.

How to Spend This Day

  • Check the smells in your home that you normally don't notice
  • Relax with your favorite aroma oils or incense
  • Give your clothes and bedding a thorough wash and deodorizing
  • Reflect on memories tied to particular scents

Smell in Modern Society

In recent years, awareness of odor-related issues has grown, giving rise to terms like "smell harassment." It's not just body odor and bad breath that can be problematic—overly strong perfumes and fabric softener scents can cause issues too. Smell Awareness Day is a good opportunity to reconsider your own odor management while also being mindful of those around you. Striking a balance between fragrance and odorlessness helps create a comfortable shared space.
