February 2

Couples Day (Fūfu no Hi)

Industry Days

What Is Couples Day?

February 2 each year is "Couples Day" (Fūfu no Hi). The date comes from a wordplay: "2 (fū) 2 (fu)" sounds like "fūfu" (married couple). It was proposed in 1987 (Showa 62) by organizations including the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper. Alongside November 22's "Good Couple Day," this is an important day for spouses to express gratitude to each other and strengthen their bond—a chance to put into action the feelings for your partner that often get put off in busy daily life.

How "Couples Day" Differs from "Good Couple Day"

While November 22's "Good Couple Day" carries a tone of aspiration and an idealized image of a "good couple," February 2 focuses more directly on the relationship itself. February is also just before the start of spring on the traditional calendar (around February 4), carrying the hopeful meaning of refreshing the relationship as a new season begins and walking forward together into a better year.

Conversation Changes Everything

The secret to a happy marriage is, above all, communication. After years together, it's easy to assume "they'll understand without me saying it," but in reality, many things go unspoken and unnoticed. On February 2, put down your phone, turn off the TV, and enjoy a slow conversation over tea. That kind of "time for just the two of you" can be the greatest gift of all.

The Many Forms of Modern "Couples"

With more dual-income households and diverse lifestyles, the shape of marriage has changed significantly. Some couples split housework and childcare evenly, others respect each other's careers, and some start a new shared hobby later in life. There's no single right answer—Couples Day is also a chance to reaffirm what feels comfortable for the two of you, rather than searching for a "socially correct" model.

The Power of Small "Thank Yous"

A special gift is nice, but what really strengthens a couple's bond is the accumulation of small everyday "thank yous": "Thanks for taking out the trash," "Thanks for the delicious meal," "Thanks for always working hard for our family." These small moments of gratitude build a foundation of trust. February 2 is a great opportunity to maintain that foundation.

The "Three A's" of a Happy Marriage

Here are three things to keep in mind for a healthy relationship.

  • Say "thank you": Make gratitude a habit and never take it for granted.
  • Have the courage to apologize: When you're in the wrong, admit it honestly instead of being stubborn.
  • Be willing to compromise: When opinions differ, respect your partner's values and look for common ground.

Tips for Making the Most of Couples Day

  • Look through old photos or keepsakes from when you first met
  • Treat yourselves to a slightly nicer dinner than usual and enjoy it slowly
  • Tell each other three things you like about your partner
  • Split a chore that usually falls on one of you and finish it together early

A Single Flower Adds a Special Touch

You don't need a lavish bouquet—just picking up a single flower on your way home can brighten the day. Many flower shops across Japan run "Couples Day" campaigns on February 2, with seasonal flowers like tulips and sweet peas gently conveying feelings words can't express.

A Tribute to Your Lifelong Partner

Couples Day is a day to thank the person who supports you more closely than anyone else—your strongest ally. A partner who walks with you through life's ups and downs is a priceless treasure. On February 2, set aside any embarrassment and offer a heartfelt "thank you" and "let's keep going together." That single sentence can light up your shared future even more warmly.
