What Is Dramatic Day?

Every March 25th is "Dramatic Day" in Japan. On March 25, 1956, in a professional baseball game between the Yomiuri Giants and the Chunichi Dragons at Korakuen Stadium, the Giants' Kazuo Higasa hit the first "pinch-hit, come-from-behind, walk-off grand slam" in the history of Japanese professional baseball. The day is called "Dramatic Day" after this extraordinarily dramatic finish.

How the Historic Hit Came About

In this game, the Giants got nine hits off Chunichi starter Hiroomi Oyane but could not score, and they entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 0-3.

• Ace Sugishita comes in: When the Giants put runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, Chunichi sent in its ace, Shigeru Sugishita, in relief.
• A pinch hitter with the bases loaded and one out: A fielder bobbled what looked like a double-play ball, loading the bases, and the next batter struck out. With one out and the bases loaded and the pitcher due up, manager Shigeru Mizuhara sent Higasa to pinch-hit.
• The fastball he was waiting for: Convinced that "Sugishita will definitely challenge me with a fastball," Higasa drove the third pitch, a high inside fastball, into the left-center stands. The final score was 4-3, and Higasa was tossed in the air by his teammates after crossing home plate.

A Walk-Off Grand Slam With "No Change"

A grand slam that turns a three-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth into a one-run win is sometimes described in Japanese as "otsuri nashi," or "no change left over."

• An extremely rare feat: A pinch-hit, come-from-behind, walk-off grand slam has been recorded only a handful of times in the long history of Japanese professional baseball.
• Against the "God of the Forkball": Shigeru Sugishita, who gave up the home run, was a great pitcher known as the "God of the Forkball" for his signature pitch. Coming off such an ace makes the home run all the more special.
