What Is Debut Day?

Every April 5th is "Debut Day" (Debyu no Hi) in Japan. On April 5, 1958 (Showa 33), Yomiuri Giants rookie Shigeo Nagashima made his professional debut in the season opener against the Kokutetsu Swallows (now the Tokyo Yakult Swallows) at Korakuen Stadium, and the day is said to be one for cheering on newcomers who debut that year. In that game, Nagashima struck out in four straight at-bats against Kokutetsu's ace Masaichi Kaneda, but the fact that every one of them was a full swing is still told as a legend today.

A Story That Began with "Four At-Bats, Four Strikeouts"

A debut is not only about dazzling success; it can also be the starting point of a story that begins with a stumble.

• Kaneda's determination: During spring training, Kaneda overheard a commentator praising Nagashima and saying he "should have no trouble hitting Kaneda." Fired up, Kaneda is said to have prepared intensely for the opener. Nagashima struck out against Kaneda again the next day when Kaneda came in as a reliever.
• The comeback: Nagashima eventually began hitting Kaneda, and in the 1959 opener he hit a home run off him. His career record against Kaneda was a .313 batting average with 18 home runs.

A Spectacular Rookie Season

Despite striking out four times in his debut, Nagashima hit 29 home runs with 92 RBIs in his first season, winning both the home run and RBI titles, and was named Rookie of the Year. In a game against Hiroshima on September 19, he hit a home run but missed first base, and it was taken away. Without that mistake, he would have achieved a "triple three" (a .300 average, 30 home runs, and 30 stolen bases) as a rookie.

Interesting Facts About Debuts

• A French word: "Debut" (début) means "beginning" or "first step" in French. It was originally used for a first appearance in high society or on stage.
• He actually struck out rarely: Because of his debut and his dramatic swings, Nagashima has an image of striking out a lot, but over his career he rarely did. Among players with 400 or more career home runs, only three struck out in fewer than 10% of at-bats: Isao Harimoto, Masahiro Doi, and Nagashima.
• A late-blooming debut: Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, didn't seriously start his fried chicken franchise business until he was in his 60s, showing that age is no barrier to a debut.
• April is debut season: In Japan, school entrances, new jobs, and transfers are concentrated in April, and the pro baseball season opens around this time too. It's a season when many people "debut" in new surroundings.
• "High school debut," "working-world debut": In Japanese, "debut" is widely used in the form "__ debut" to mean starting something for the first time.

• Look back on your own rookie days and recall the anxiety and enthusiasm you felt
