What Is World Exposition Day?

Every March 15th is "World Exposition Day" (万国博デー, Bankoku Haku Dē) in Japan. On March 15, 1970, Japan's first World Exposition — "Expo '70" (日本万国博覧会, Nihon Bankoku Hakurankai) — opened to the public at Senri Hills (千里丘陵) in Suita City, Osaka. The exposition, held under the theme "Progress and Harmony for Mankind," attracted approximately 64 million visitors over its six-month run — the highest attendance ever recorded at a World Exposition at the time — and announced Japan's arrival as a modern, technologically sophisticated nation to the world.

Expo '70: Japan on the World Stage

Expo '70 was a watershed moment in Japan's postwar history — the nation's first opportunity to host a World Exposition and to showcase its extraordinary postwar recovery and technological achievements to an international audience. The exposition featured pavilions from 77 countries, futuristic architecture, and technological demonstrations including the first public demonstration of HDTV, robots, and early personal computing concepts. Japan's own pavilions showcased traditional arts alongside cutting-edge technology — a juxtaposition of ancient and ultramodern that became a defining image of Japan's national identity.

Cultural Legacy

Expo '70's cultural impact on Japan was profound. The Taro Okamoto-designed "Tower of the Sun" (太陽の塔) — a 70-meter concrete sculpture with three suns at different elevations — became one of Japan's most iconic artworks and still stands at the Expo Commemorative Park (万博記念公園) in Suita. The exposition influenced a generation of Japanese designers, artists, and planners and is remembered as one of the most positive experiences of collective national pride in postwar Japan.

Osaka Expo 2025

Japan is hosting another World Exposition in Osaka in 2025 — "Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan" — 55 years after Expo '70. The theme, "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," focuses on sustainable development, technology, and human wellbeing. The 2025 Expo is expected to attract approximately 28 million visitors to Yumeshima (夢洲) island in Osaka Bay.

Fun Facts

• Moon rock: The United States pavilion at Expo '70 displayed lunar rocks brought back by the Apollo missions — attracting enormous lines of Japanese visitors eager to see material from the Moon that had been collected just the previous year. The exhibit is remembered as one of the most popular at the entire exposition.
• Okamoto Taro: The Tower of the Sun's creator, Taro Okamoto (岡本太郎, 1911–1996), was Japan's most famous avant-garde artist — his exuberant, pop-influenced style and famous quote "Art is explosion!" (芸術は爆発だ！) made him one of Japan's most quotable creative personalities.
