Every May 14th is "Thermometer Day" in Japan. The date marks the birthday of Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit (May 14, 1686 – September 16, 1736), the German-Dutch physicist who developed the mercury thermometer in 1714 and created the Fahrenheit temperature scale — the first standardized temperature scale to gain widespread use. Thermometer Day celebrates the instrument that made it possible to measure temperature precisely, transforming medicine, meteorology, science, and everyday life.
Fahrenheit and the Mercury Thermometer
Before Fahrenheit, temperature measurement was unreliable — early thermometers used alcohol and had no standardized scale, meaning readings from one instrument could not be compared with another. Fahrenheit solved this by developing a mercury thermometer (1714) with consistent, reproducible calibration and creating a temperature scale anchored to fixed physical reference points. His scale, using 32°F for the freezing point of water and 96°F for normal human body temperature (later revised to 98.6°F), became the standard in English-speaking countries and remains in use in the United States today.
Celsius and the Metric World
In 1742, Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius proposed the Celsius (Centigrade) scale, setting 0° at the freezing point of water and 100° at the boiling point. This 100-division scale, more mathematically intuitive, was adopted by the metric system and is now the standard in Japan and most of the world. Japan uses Celsius universally in weather forecasts, medicine, cooking, and science — though Fahrenheit remains standard in American contexts.
The Thermometer in Medicine and Daily Life
The clinical thermometer — a small, precise mercury or digital thermometer for measuring body temperature — became a cornerstone of modern medicine. In Japan, checking body temperature (体温測定, taion sokutei) is a routine part of medical examinations and has become widespread in daily life, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic normalized temperature screening at public facilities, schools, and workplaces. Japan has been a leader in developing ear and forehead thermometers for quick, non-invasive readings.
