What Is Iron Man Day?

Every June 13th is also "Iron Man Day" (鉄人の日, Tetsujin no Hi) in Japan. On June 13, 1987, Hiroshima Toyo Carp (広島東洋カープ) baseball player Kinugasa Sachio (衣笠祥雄, 1947–2018) played in his 2,131st consecutive professional baseball game — surpassing the previous world record of 2,130 consecutive games held by New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig. Kinugasa earned the nickname "Iron Man" (鉄人, Tetsujin) for his extraordinary durability and consistency, which became a defining feature of his legendary career.

Kinugasa Sachio: Japan's Iron Man

Kinugasa Sachio played for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp from 1965 to 1987 — a 23-year career that established him as one of the great players in Japanese baseball history. His consecutive games record (2,215 games at retirement) reflected not only physical durability but a commitment to showing up for his teammates every day regardless of injury or fatigue. Kinugasa famously played through a broken arm sustained in a collision at home plate in 1979 — continuing his consecutive games streak and embodying the "iron man" spirit that made him beloved by Carp fans and respected throughout Japanese baseball.

The World Record Moment

When Kinugasa broke Gehrig's consecutive games record on June 13, 1987, the game at Hiroshima's Municipal Baseball Stadium was attended by a capacity crowd and watched by millions on television. Gehrig's widow Eleanor Gehrig sent congratulations from the United States, and the moment was celebrated as a historic achievement that connected American and Japanese baseball traditions through the concept of athletic longevity and dedication.
