What Is Lucky Zone Day?

May 26th is known as "Lucky Zone Day" (ラッキーゾーンの日, Rakkī Zōn no Hi) in Japan. On May 26, 1947, Hanshin Koshien Stadium (阪神甲子園球場) — Japan's most famous baseball ground — installed the country's first "lucky zone": a fence set up inside the outfield, in front of the actual wall, to shorten the home run distance. Although it is not an anniversary registered with the Japan Anniversary Association, the date is remembered as a unique piece of Japanese baseball history. "Lucky zone" is a Japanese-made English term with no direct English equivalent.

Koshien Stadium and the Lucky Zone

Koshien Stadium, opened in 1924, had an outfield so deep that home runs over the fence were rare. After professional league play resumed in 1946, the stadium's manager, Hanshin Electric Railway, installed wire fencing from the foul lines to the power alleys, cutting the distance down the lines from about 103.6 m to about 85.4 m. The effect was dramatic: in the 1947 season, no over-the-fence home runs had been hit in the 36 games before the installation, but 60 were hit in the 77 games after it. Similar zones soon appeared at other ballparks. Koshien's lucky zone was finally removed in December 1991, after that season ended, as internationally sized ballparks spread and the Japan High School Baseball Federation, concerned about home runs from metal bats, pushed for its removal.

Koshien as Sacred Ground

Koshien Stadium is the spiritual home of Japanese high school baseball (高校野球, kōkō yakyū). Every August, the National High School Baseball Championship is held there, drawing millions of television viewers and filling the stands with passionate supporters from every corner of Japan. Players who make it to Koshien are celebrated nationwide, and the tradition of players scooping dirt from the field as a keepsake is one of Japanese baseball's most beloved rituals.

Japan's Baseball Culture

Baseball (野球, yakyū) was introduced to Japan in the early 1870s and has grown to be the country's most popular professional team sport. The Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league — with 12 teams — attracts tens of millions of fans. The crossover between NPB and MLB has grown dramatically, with Japanese stars like Ichiro Suzuki, Hideki Matsui, and Shohei Ohtani achieving superstar status in America while remaining beloved in Japan.

• Ivy walls: The outfield walls at Koshien are famously covered in ivy (ツタ, tsuta), which turns red in autumn and is one of the stadium's most iconic visual features.
• Bullpens inside: The space between the lucky zone fence and the real outfield wall was often used as the pitchers' bullpen.
• The idea lives on: Modern ballparks such as Fukuoka PayPay Dome have added "home run terrace" seating inside the outfield — a new take on the same idea.
