What Is Le Mans Day?

Every May 26th is also "Le Mans Day" (ル・マンの日, Ru Man no Hi) in Japan. On May 26, 1923, the first running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (24 Heures du Mans) endurance race was held at the Circuit de la Sarthe near Le Mans, France — inaugurating the world's most famous and prestigious endurance automobile race. Japan's strong connection to the race — through Toyota's repeated near-victories and the 2018 triumph of a Porsche with a Japanese driver — gives Le Mans special resonance in Japan's automotive culture.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans

The 24 Hours of Le Mans, first run in 1923, is the world's oldest active sports car race in its current configuration. Teams of two or three drivers share a single car for 24 continuous hours on a circuit that combines purpose-built racing track sections with closed public roads — including the famous "Mulsanne Straight" where cars historically reached speeds exceeding 400 km/h. The race tests both the mechanical endurance of the cars and the strategic and physical endurance of the teams and drivers.
