What Is NHK Foundation Day?

Every August 20th is "NHK Foundation Day" (NHK創立記念日, NHK Sōritsu Kinenbi) in Japan. On August 20, 1926, the three regional broadcasting stations operating in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya merged to form a single unified broadcasting organization — the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (社団法人日本放送協会, Nihon Hōsō Kyōkai), universally known by its acronym NHK. The present NHK was established on June 1, 1950, as a special corporation under the Broadcast Act, taking over the work of the earlier incorporated association. This consolidation created Japan's national public broadcaster, which has provided news, educational content, cultural programming, and emergency information to the Japanese public for 100 years.
