What Is NHK Foundation Day?

Every August 20th is "NHK Foundation Day" (NHK創立記念日, NHK Sōritsu Kinenbi) in Japan. On August 20, 1926, the three regional broadcasting stations operating in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya merged to form a single unified broadcasting organization — the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (社団法人日本放送協会, Nihon Hōsō Kyōkai), universally known by its acronym NHK. This consolidation created Japan's national public broadcaster, which has provided news, educational content, cultural programming, and emergency information to the Japanese public for over 95 years.

NHK is organized as a "special corporation" (特殊法人, tokushu hōjin) — neither a government agency nor a commercial entity, but a public institution funded primarily through the mandatory "receiving fee" (受信料, jushinryō) paid by households possessing television-receiving equipment. This unique funding model — in which all television owners pay regardless of whether they watch NHK — has been controversial but has also insulated NHK from direct government control and commercial pressures, enabling a degree of editorial independence.
