Tokyo DisneySea Opening Day

Historical Anniversaries

What Is Tokyo DisneySea Opening Day?

Every September 4th is "Tokyo DisneySea Opening Day" (東京ディズニーシー開園記念日, Tōkyō Dizunīshī Kaien Kinenbi) in Japan. On September 4, 2001, Tokyo DisneySea (東京ディズニーシー) opened as the second theme park of Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu City, Chiba Prefecture — becoming the world's only Disney theme park dedicated to maritime and ocean exploration themes, and one of the most imaginatively designed theme parks ever built. DisneySea's extraordinary physical theming — including a working volcanic island, a Mediterranean harbor village, and life-sized replicas of historic ships — earned immediate recognition as a new benchmark in theme park design.

Tokyo DisneySea's Design Excellence

Tokyo DisneySea was developed by the Oriental Land Company (オリエンタルランド, the Japanese operator of Tokyo Disney Resort) with exceptional attention to detail and commitment to physical authenticity. Unlike other Disney parks that use forced perspective and visual tricks, DisneySea built actual full-scale environments — the Mediterranean Harbor's gondolas operate in real water; the Tower of Terror Hotel is a full-height building; the volcano in "Mysterious Island" contains multiple attractions within a volcanic structure that periodically "erupts" with real fire and steam effects.

DisneySea's Unique Identity

Tokyo DisneySea serves an older audience than most Disney parks — designed with adult travelers in mind alongside families, featuring more sophisticated theming, alcoholic beverages (unusual for Disney parks), and attractions with higher minimum age or height requirements. The park's seven "ports of call" — Mediterranean Harbor, American Waterfront, Port Discovery, Lost River Delta, Arabian Coast, Mermaid Lagoon, and Mysterious Island — each offer comprehensive environmental storytelling that creates genuinely immersive worlds.

Fun Facts

  • World's best theme park: Tokyo DisneySea has been repeatedly ranked as the world's best theme park in international surveys of theme park enthusiasts — including multiple wins in the Themed Entertainment Association's annual attendance reports as the world's most-loved theme park. Its consistent excellence reflects the unusually high standards of maintenance, hospitality, and creative programming that Oriental Land Company applies.
  • Fantasy Springs: Tokyo DisneySea's 2024 expansion, "Fantasy Springs" (ファンタジースプリングス), added a new themed area featuring Frozen, Tangled, and Peter Pan — a major addition that kept DisneySea at the forefront of theme park attractions globally.
