What Is Architect Day?

July 1st is Architect Day in Japan, established by the Japan Federation of Architects & Building Engineers Associations to commemorate the enactment of the Architects Act on July 1, 1950. The day aims to raise public awareness of the role architects play in society, while encouraging architects themselves to reaffirm their professional mission and pride.

History of Japan's Architect Licensing System

• July 1, 1950: The Architects Act takes effect, creating the national licensing system for Class 1 and Class 2 Architects
• 1987: The Wooden Architect license is added, completing the current three-tier system
• 2006: Major revisions follow the Aneha scandal (fraudulent earthquake-resistance data), strengthening supervision responsibilities
• Today: Approximately 370,000 Class 1, 770,000 Class 2, and 17,000 Wooden Architects practice nationwide

Types of Architects and What They Do

• Class 1 Architect: The highest-level license, authorizing the design and supervision of all types of buildings. Pass rate roughly 10-15%
• Class 2 Architect: Authorized to design and supervise buildings up to a certain size and structural type
• Wooden Architect: A specialist in traditional Japanese wooden architecture and historic building preservation

• Exam difficulty: The two-stage exam (written + design drafting) has an overall pass rate of about 10-13%
