What Is Naha Day?

July 8th is Naha Day. It began in 1999, when a citizens' group held events marking the day as an occasion for grassroots community building, under the motto of loving Naha and doing what they could for its future. Since 2004, Naha City has supported the idea, holding city events under the "Naha Day" name around July 8 and backing citizens' activities. The date comes from a simple Japanese wordplay: "7" (na) + "8" (ha) = "Naha." The day celebrates the history, culture, and charms of Naha, the prefectural capital of Okinawa and the vibrant hub of Okinawan tourism.

Naha's History and Highlights

• Shuri Castle: The royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429-1879), registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (as "Shurijo Castle Site") in 2000. The main hall and other buildings burned down in 2019, and restoration has been under way toward completion of the main hall in autumn 2026
• Kokusai-dori (International Street): A 1.6-km thoroughfare nicknamed the "Miracle Mile" for its remarkable post-war revival
• Makishi Public Market: Naha's beloved "kitchen" with colorful tropical fish and uniquely Okinawan ingredients
• Yui Rail: Okinawa's only monorail, opened in 2003. It runs from Naha Airport via Shuri and was extended to Tedako-Uranishi Station in Urasoe City in 2019
