Che Guevara Day

Historical Anniversaries

What Is Che Guevara Day?

October 8th marks the anniversary of the capture of Ernesto "Che" Guevara — the Argentine-born physician, Marxist revolutionary, and guerrilla leader who became one of the most recognisable figures of the 20th century. On October 8, 1967, Guevara was captured by Bolivian forces in the village of La Higuera, Bolivia, and executed the following day at the age of 39.

Who Was Che Guevara?

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna (1928–1967) was born into a middle-class Argentine family. As a medical student, he and a friend travelled across South America by motorcycle — a journey that confronted him with extreme poverty and inequality, radicalising him completely. (The journey was later immortalised in the 2004 film The Motorcycle Diaries.)

  • The Cuban Revolution (1953–1959): Guevara met Fidel Castro in Mexico and joined the guerrilla campaign to overthrow Cuba's Batista dictatorship; after victory, he served as head of the National Bank and Minister of Industry
  • The nickname "Che": From Argentine slang for "hey" or "mate" — a word Guevara used constantly — it became his identity worldwide
  • The iconic photograph: Alberto Korda's 1960 portrait, Guerrillero Heroico, is considered one of the most reproduced images in history — appearing on T-shirts, murals, and posters across the globe

Bolivia and the End

After leaving Cuba to pursue revolution elsewhere, Guevara's Bolivian guerrilla campaign failed to gain local support. Exhausted and outnumbered, his unit was surrounded on October 8, 1967. He was captured and executed the next morning.

Legacy and Debate

  • To admirers: A selfless idealist who gave up comfort and privilege to fight for the world's poorest people
  • To critics: A ruthless commander who ordered executions and pursued violent revolution without democratic accountability
  • As a cultural icon: Beyond politics, Guevara's image has become a global symbol of youthful rebellion, anti-establishment spirit, and the belief that a better world is possible

How to Engage With This Day

  • Watch The Motorcycle Diaries (2004) — the film that traces the journey that turned a young doctor into a revolutionary
  • Explore Cuban music, food, and culture — a society deeply shaped by the revolution Guevara helped create
  • Reflect on the complex relationship between idealism, violence, and lasting change
  • Ask yourself: what do you believe in strongly enough to act on?

The Man Behind the T-Shirt

Few faces are more globally recognised than Che Guevara's — yet few are as little understood. On October 8th, look beyond the iconic image and consider who Guevara actually was: a doctor who became a soldier, a writer who became a symbol, a man who believed so fiercely in a better world that he gave his life trying to create it. Whether hero or cautionary tale, his story forces us to ask what we stand for — and what we are willing to risk for it.
