What Is Risshu?

Usually around August 7th (in some years the 8th) falls "Risshu" (立秋), one of the 24 solar terms of the traditional Japanese calendar, marking the day the sun reaches 135 degrees of celestial longitude. On the calendar, autumn is said to begin on this day. According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Risshu fell on August 7th in 2026. It lies exactly midway between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox.

The Gap Between the "Calendar's Autumn" and the Actual Heat

Risshu is the 13th of the 24 solar terms, following "Taisho" (Major Heat).

• Its place in the calendar: follows "Taisho" (Major Heat) and marks the calendar start of autumn; the roughly 18 days before Risshu are the summer "doyo" period
• The actual climate: intense lingering summer heat almost always continues well past Risshu, and this mismatch between the calendar and how the weather actually feels is a common topic of conversation
• A seasonal custom: summer greeting cards sent after Risshu switch from "midsummer greetings" to "lingering-heat greetings"
• The next solar term: after Risshu comes "Shosho," when the heat is said to begin easing, usually around August 23rd (August 23rd in 2026)

Why Call It "Autumn" When It's Still So Hot?

The 24 solar terms are said to have been based on the climate of the Yellow River basin in ancient China, and don't always match Japan's actual climate. Even so, the term Risshu carries a cultural sensitivity to autumn's first faint signs -- an earlier sunset, a subtle change in the evening breeze.
