April 21st is "Kawanecha Day" in Japan, established by the Kawanecha Tea Road Promotion Council to help more people discover the appeal of "Kawanecha," a premium tea from Shizuoka Prefecture.
Why April 21st?
The date reflects the timing just ahead of the new tea season.
- Its connection to "77 nights": the day often falls on the 77th night counted from Risshun (the start of spring), one day before the 88th night
- Just before the new tea season: this timing falls right before new tea picking begins in earnest, aiming to build excitement for the region as a tea-producing area
- The organization behind it: established by the Kawanecha Tea Road Promotion Council, made up of tea industry figures from Kawanehon Town and the Kawane area of Shimada City in Shizuoka Prefecture
Kawanecha, Counted Among Japan's Three Great Premium Teas
Kawanecha is tea made from leaves grown in the Kawane region of Shizuoka Prefecture and finished at tea factories within the region. It is sometimes counted alongside Uji tea and Sayama tea as one of "Japan's three great premium teas," known for its rich aroma and well-balanced sweetness and astringency.
