Lake Suwa Day

What Is Lake Suwa Day?

October 1st is "Lake Suwa Day" in Nagano Prefecture, designated from fiscal 2019 by the Lake Suwa Creation Vision Promotion Council, a public-private body working under the Lake Suwa Creation Vision drawn up in March 2018. Part of the Lake Suwa basin sewerage system came into service on this day in 1979, and the council's declaration calls the date "the starting point of Lake Suwa's revival."

A Community Working Together to Protect Lake Suwa's Future

Lake Suwa, located in central Nagano Prefecture, is blessed with rich natural beauty and tourism resources, while also facing ongoing challenges like water quality preservation.

• Origin: chosen to mark October 1, 1979, when part of the Lake Suwa basin sewerage system first came into service
• Purpose: to encourage every individual to take an interest in Lake Suwa and work together as a community to shape its future
• Growing collaboration: a framework has been built bringing together government, resident groups, businesses, and others in shared effort

How Sewerage Development Has Supported Lake Suwa's Water Quality

Lake Suwa once faced serious water quality problems, but years of effort, including the development of the basin sewerage system, have gradually improved conditions. Lake Suwa Day is also an opportunity to reflect on that progress.
