Company Newsletter Day
Industry DaysWhat Is Company Newsletter Day?
October 5th is "Company Newsletter Day" in Japan. It was established by Nana Corporate Communication (now Wizworks Inc.), a firm that consults on internal newsletters, and is registered with the Japan Anniversary Association. The date comes from a wordplay on 10-5 as "to-go," as in "togo," to unite the company, and from the national company magazine planning competition held in the first week of October.
A Day to Rethink Internal Communication
The aim of the day is to recognize the role of the company newsletter as a communication tool, and to encourage its use to energize organizations.
- Wordplay: 10 (to) and 5 (go) suggest "togo," bringing the company together
- Another origin: a national competition honoring outstanding company magazine projects is held in the first week of October
- Definition: a company newsletter is any medium for internal PR, including print magazines, websites and video
- Recent trend: web and app-based newsletters have grown with intranets, but print newsletters remain common
Japan's First Company Newsletter Dates Back to the Meiji Era
Japan's first company newsletter is said to be "Kanebo no Kiteki" (also called "Hyogo no Kiteki"), published by Kanebo (now Kracie) in 1903. It lives on today as "Kracie News." For over 120 years, companies have been finding ways to share information and ideas internally.
Tips for Marking This Day
- Read the latest issue of your company newsletter or intranet articles
- Chat with colleagues about another department's project featured in the newsletter
- Send a note of feedback to the newsletter team
- Suggest a story from your own team
