What Is Driver Day?

October 18th is "Driver Day" in Japan. It was established by Butsuryu Sangyo Shimbunsha, publisher of the logistics trade paper Butsuryu Weekly, and is certified and registered by the Japan Anniversary Association. The date is a play on words: 10-1-8 can be read as "do-rai-ba" (driver). It is a day to thank all professional drivers -- of trucks, buses, taxis and more -- and to raise their standing in society.
