What Is World Town Planning Day?

November 8th is "World Town Planning Day." It was proposed in 1949 by Professor Carlos Paolera, an Argentine urban planning scholar, with the goal of founding a world urban planning organization. Also called "World Urbanism Day," it is observed in more than 30 countries on four continents.

Toward Livable Communities

The day is meant to recognize and promote the role urban planning plays in creating livable communities.

Japan's City Planning Act Dates From 1968

Japan's current City Planning Act was enacted in 1968. It aims at the sound development and orderly improvement of cities, contributing to balanced national development and public welfare. Much of the streetscape we walk through every day -- roads, parks, and the layout of residential and commercial areas -- is shaped by such plans. Related observances in Japan include Town Development Month in June, Urban Greening Month in October, and Urban Landscape Day on October 4.
