What Is Paragliding Day?

Every July 31st is "Paragliding Day" (パラグライダー記念日, Paraguraidā Kinenbi) in Japan. On July 31, 1988, Japan's first paragliding championship was held in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture — marking the formal establishment of competitive paragliding as a sport in Japan. Paragliding (パラグライダー, paraguraidā) — the recreational and competitive air sport of flying lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft — had been introduced to Japan in the mid-1980s and rapidly attracted enthusiasts drawn to its combination of accessibility, natural beauty, and the extraordinary freedom of soaring flight.

Paragliding in Japan's Mountain Landscape

Japan's mountainous terrain — covering approximately 73% of the country's land area — makes it ideal for paragliding. Pilots can launch from mountain ridges and thermal sites throughout the country, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and the combination of Japan's varied topography with its scenic landscapes of mountains, coastlines, and rice paddies makes paragliding here a visually extraordinary experience. Sites like Hakuba in Nagano (a major ski resort that becomes a paragliding hub in summer), Aso in Kumamoto, and many coastal locations attract both domestic enthusiasts and international pilots.

Paragliding's growth in Japan from the late 1980s onward coincided with a broader expansion of outdoor and adventure sports culture — hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and kayaking all grew rapidly as Japan's increasingly affluent middle class sought active leisure experiences in natural settings. The Japan Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (日本ハング・パラグライダー連盟, JHF) governs the sport and maintains safety and licensing standards for pilots.
