International Men's Day
World ObservancesWhat Is International Men's Day?
November 19th is "International Men's Day." It is said to have begun in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, and it focuses on the health of men and boys and on thinking about gender equality. Today, events are held in many parts of the world, including Australia, North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
A Day to Think About Men's Health and Better Relationships
International Men's Day aims to focus on the health of men and boys, improve gender relations, and highlight positive male role models who promote gender equality. While International Women's Day on March 8th is widely known, International Men's Day is not on the United Nations' list of international days; it grew out of private initiatives.
- Beginning: said to have started in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999
- Purpose: to focus on the health of men and boys and to think about gender equality
- Reach: events are held in Australia, the Caribbean, North America, Asia, Europe, Africa, and elsewhere
- Difference from Women's Day: unlike International Women's Day on March 8th, it is not on the UN's list of international days
The Ideas Behind the "Six Pillars"
International Men's Day has what are called "six pillars." One is promoting positive male role models, including not only movie stars and athletes but also ordinary men who live honest, steady lives. Others include celebrating men's contributions to society, family, and childcare, focusing on men's physical and mental well-being, and promoting gender equality. There is also a movement called "Movember" that makes November a month for raising awareness of men's health.
Tips for Marking This Day
- Review your own or your family's health checkup results
- Talk with those close to you about work styles and sharing housework and childcare
- Think about what makes a workplace comfortable for everyone, regardless of gender
- Say thank you to someone close to you whom you respect
Toward a Society Where Everyone Can Be Themselves
Thinking about men's health and ways of living leads to thinking about a society that works for everyone, including women. November 19th is a day to pay attention to the health and happiness of the people around us, regardless of gender.
