What Is Word Processor Day?

Every September 26th is "Word Processor Day" (ワープロ記念日, Wāpuro Kinenbi) in Japan. On September 26, 1978, Toshiba announced the "JW-10" — the world's first Japanese-language word processor. The JW-10 was a landmark in computing history: it solved the formidable challenge of inputting, processing, and printing Japanese text — which requires handling thousands of kanji characters alongside two phonetic syllabaries — using dedicated hardware and software that represented years of engineering effort. The announcement transformed office work in Japan and launched a new era of Japanese-language computing.

The Challenge of Japanese-Language Computing

The development of Japanese-language word processing was far more complex than for alphabetic languages. Japanese writing uses three scripts simultaneously — kanji (thousands of Chinese-derived characters), hiragana (46 phonetic characters), and katakana (46 phonetic characters) — and a typical document requires thousands of distinct characters. Early computing technology, designed for the 26-letter Latin alphabet, was fundamentally ill-suited to Japanese text. Toshiba's JW-10 solved this through dedicated hardware, a specialized keyboard, and a kanji conversion system that allowed users to input text phonetically and convert it to the correct kanji.

The Japanese Word Processor Boom

The JW-10 was initially priced at ¥6.3 million — the cost of a house — and weighed 220 kg. Yet its commercial and cultural impact was immediate. Within a decade, rival manufacturers had produced smaller, cheaper word processors, and by the 1980s the Japanese word processor (ワープロ専用機, wāpuro sen'yōki) had become a fixture of Japanese offices, transforming administrative work and dramatically expanding who could produce professional-quality Japanese text. At peak sales in the late 1980s and early 1990s, millions of dedicated word processors were sold in Japan annually.

Legacy: The Kana-Kanji Conversion System

The kana-kanji conversion system pioneered in the JW-10 — inputting text phonetically and converting to the appropriate kanji — became the universal standard for Japanese text input and remains so today on computers and smartphones. The "ATOK" conversion engine (developed by JustSystems) and Microsoft's IME (Input Method Editor) are modern descendants of the input technology Toshiba pioneered in 1978.
