What Is Nuclear Power Day?

Every October 26th is "Nuclear Power Day" (原子力の日, Genshiryoku no Hi) in Japan. The date marks two milestones: on October 26, 1963, Japan achieved its first nuclear power generation at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute's experimental reactor in Tōkai, Ibaraki Prefecture — producing electricity for the first time from a Japanese nuclear reactor; and on October 26, 1956, Japan joined the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Nuclear Power Day was established in 1964 to mark both events and to promote public understanding of nuclear energy.

Japan's Nuclear Energy Program

Japan, as the only country to have suffered nuclear attack, developed nuclear energy with particular awareness of its dual nature — destructive weapon and potentially peaceful energy source. Japan's nuclear power program grew steadily from the 1960s onward, with commercial reactors operated by regional electric utilities. By 2010, nuclear power provided approximately 30% of Japan's electricity, with plans to expand its share further as a low-carbon energy source. Japan possessed neither the natural resources (oil, gas, coal) nor the hydropower potential to meet its electricity needs without imported fuels, making nuclear energy attractive as a domestic source of baseload power.

Fukushima and Its Aftermath

The March 11, 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami triggered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster — three reactor meltdowns that contaminated large areas of Fukushima Prefecture and forced the evacuation of approximately 154,000 people. In the disaster's aftermath, all of Japan's 50 operating commercial reactors were taken offline for safety inspections; most remained offline for years as new regulatory standards were developed. The disaster fundamentally reshaped Japan's energy policy, accelerating investment in renewable energy and reopening debate about the role of nuclear power in Japan's energy future.

Nuclear Power in Japan Today

As of the mid-2020s, Japan has restarted a growing number of reactors under new safety standards established by the Nuclear Regulation Authority (原子力規制委員会, NRA), while continuing to expand solar, wind, and other renewable capacity. The government has indicated nuclear power will continue to play a role in Japan's decarbonization strategy, though its long-term share remains debated.
