What Is Austrian National Day?

October 26th is Austrian National Day (Nationalfeiertag) — Austria's most important public holiday. It commemorates October 26, 1955, when the Austrian Parliament passed the Federal Constitutional Law on the Neutrality of Austria, declaring Austria a permanently neutral state. Having spent over a decade under Nazi occupation and then four-power Allied occupation, Austria had finally reclaimed its full sovereignty — and chose to stand apart from both Cold War blocs.

The Road to Independence

• 1938 (Anschluss): Nazi Germany annexed Austria — an event later reframed in Austrian national memory as an occupation rather than a union
• 1945–1955: After Germany's defeat, Austria was divided into four occupation zones controlled by the USA, UK, France, and the Soviet Union
• May 15, 1955: The Austrian State Treaty (Staatsvertrag) was signed in Vienna by the four powers and Austria, ending the occupation
• October 1955: The occupation forces completed their withdrawal by the October 25 deadline, and on October 26 Parliament passed the Neutrality Law. Austria declared itself permanently neutral — joining neither NATO nor the Warsaw Pact

Austria's Role as a Neutral Nation

• "The Third UN City" (after New York and Geneva): Vienna hosts the UN Office at Vienna (UNOV), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and OPEC — making it one of the world's most important diplomatic cities

• Refugee gateway: Austria's neutral geographic position made it the primary escape route for refugees from the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the 1968 Prague Spring, and later conflicts
