What Is Arranged Marriage Day?

Every November 6th is "Arranged Marriage Day" (お見合い記念日, Omiai Kinenbi) in Japan. On November 6, 1890, Japan's first modern "omiai" (お見合い, arranged meeting for the purpose of marriage) was held at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo — an event that formalized a practice of chaperoned meetings between prospective marriage partners that had existed informally for centuries in Japan's aristocratic and merchant classes. The 1890 hotel-based omiai established a structured, socially recognized format for arranged marriage introductions that would shape Japanese matchmaking practice for the following century.

The Tradition of Omiai

Omiai — the formal meeting between prospective marriage partners, arranged through an intermediary (仲人, nakōdo) — was for most of Japanese history the standard method by which marriages were arranged, particularly in the samurai and merchant classes. Partners were selected on the basis of family status, financial standing, and compatibility of character; romantic love as a prerequisite for marriage was a Western concept that gained influence in Japan only gradually. The formal omiai — a meeting at a neutral venue, typically in the presence of family members, to assess mutual suitability — provided a structured context for this process.

Omiai vs. Renai: The Marriage Choice

In postwar Japan, the balance between "omiai marriages" (お見合い結婚, arranged) and "renai marriages" (恋愛結婚, love marriages) shifted dramatically. In the immediate postwar years, omiai marriages accounted for the majority; by the 1970s, love marriages had become dominant; and by the 1990s, love marriages accounted for around 90% of unions. Yet omiai did not disappear — it evolved into a modern industry of marriage introduction services (結婚相談所, kekkon sōdanjo) and matchmaking apps (婚活アプリ, konkatsu apuri) that use data-driven matching to facilitate structured introductions.

Konkatsu: Japan's Marriage-Hunting Culture

Contemporary Japan has developed a distinctive "konkatsu" (婚活, marriage-hunting activity) culture — a range of structured activities designed to help single people meet potential marriage partners. Marriage introduction agencies, konkatsu parties, speed dating events, and matchmaking apps have created a substantial industry serving millions of Japanese singles. The term reflects Japan's practical, goal-oriented approach to finding a life partner in an era of late marriage and declining birth rates.
