What Is Battery Day?

December 12th is "Battery Day" (Batterī no Hi) in Japan. The name comes from the baseball term "battery," meaning the pitcher-catcher pairing. In baseball scoring, the pitcher's position is numbered 1 and the catcher's is 2, so the date with two 12s — December 12 — was chosen. The Japan Storage Battery Industries Association (now the Battery Association of Japan) established it in 1985 as "Car Battery Day" and renamed it "Battery Day" in 1991. It encourages drivers to check their car batteries in winter, when cold weather puts batteries under strain.

Types of Batteries and Their Roles

• Lead-Acid Batteries: Used to start car engines and provide backup power. Inexpensive and high-capacity, though heavy.
• Lithium-Ion Batteries: The dominant battery type for smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles (EVs). Lightweight with high energy density.
• Solid-State Batteries: A next-generation technology under intense development worldwide, promising major improvements in safety and energy density.
• Fuel Cells: Generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, used in fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and home systems such as Ene-Farm.

As EV adoption grows and renewable energy storage becomes more important, demand for lithium-ion batteries is expected to keep growing. Japanese companies such as Panasonic remain notable players, while competition from Chinese and South Korean manufacturers is fierce. Japanese companies are also investing heavily in developing solid-state batteries.

• Avoid keeping your smartphone at 0% or 100% for long periods (staying roughly between 20% and 80% is often recommended).
• Avoid leaving devices in direct sunlight or high heat for extended periods.
• Have your car battery checked regularly, and confirm it has not passed its typical replacement interval (generally said to be a few years).
